This large square is the beating heart of the city. It is surrounded by imposing buildings, such as those of the company Unión y el Fénix Español (1926-1927) with immense glass sections and azulejos, and the Casa Colomera (1928) with two neo-baroque towers. In the middle stands the equestrian statue of Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, alias El Gran Capitán (see p. 267). The jets of water that spray out of the pavement offer a pleasant cooling on hot summer days and are especially popular with children, which provides a cheerful spectacle for the many visitors to the terraces.
