The artist residence Gasteiger in Holzhausen on the western shore of Lake Ammersee came to the Free State of Bavaria in 1984 as a legacy from Irene Faber-Gasteiger, the daughter of the artist couple Mathias and Anna Sophie Gasteiger. In 1994 a museum was opened in the artists' villa built between 1908 and 1913 and at the same time the associated landscape park was made accessible.

Mathias Gasteiger (1871-1934) is one of the well-known Munich artists of the turn of the century. His art has evolved from late Historicism through Art Nouveau to Neoclassicism. Meanwhile, his wife, Anna Sophie Gasteiger 1877-1954, made a name for herself as a flower painter.

Numerous works by Mathias Gasteiger are exhibited in the Museum in the Künstlerhaus, such as the figurative group »Der Tanz«, created in 1902, which, in addition to echoes of ancient mythology, also reveals satirical traits. The gilded figure of »Eva« from 1905 with calm, neoclassical features is also impressive.
