The Sanctuary owes its name to the right of entry granted to anyone who entered its walls, a right established by Edward the Confessor. This invitation was not extended to traitors, "unbelievers," or those who committed sacrilege; nor was it extended to members of the Jewish faith. The more affluent refugees lived within the walls, while the common people resided in tenement buildings, forming small colonies. (Source: Thomson Tyndall)
