The Lala Pasa Mosque was once a cathedral. The former St. Nicholas Cathedral was consecrated by the Crusaders as the second coronation cathedral of the Lusignans relatively soon after its foundation stone was laid (1298), in the same year as St. Sophia's Cathedral in Nicosia, 1326. Immediately after the Ottoman conquest of Famagusta in 1571, the church was converted into a mosque and named after the conquering commander, Lala Kara Mustafa Pasha. The north tower received a small minaret, and the paintings and figural decorations were removed (Wikipedia).
