In the old town of Landsberg runs between the Bayertor and Schmalzturm the "Alte Bergstrasse", a beautiful medieval alley. For many years it was the only street in Germany with left-hand traffic. The steep gradient on the Alte Bergstrasse often led to accidents with horse-drawn carriages and to the hazards of the drivers accompanying the wagons in the middle of the street. The switch to left-hand traffic enabled the drivers to move along the outside of the road and thus better protect themselves.
After the bypass of Landsberg had a rather calming effect on the "Alte Bergstrasse", a diverse and varied shopping area with a special flair was created there in 1996 due to the initiative of some Landsberg businessmen.
