St. Joseph's Church in Starnberg is situated directly adjacent to the castle gardens on the so-called Castle Hill and is considered the town's Rococo gem. It was built between 1764 and 1770 on the site of the former dance hall and guesthouse of Starnberg Castle – Elector Maximilian III Joseph gifted the town the land and building materials for this purpose. The church is particularly distinguished by its magnificent high altar by Ignaz Günther, one of Upper Bavaria's most important church sculptors. It is dedicated to St. Joseph, who has been the patron saint of Bavaria since 1763.

Starnberg's third church has stood on the site of the former dance and guest house of Starnberg Castle since 1766. Elector Max III Josef had the old building demolished and gave the people of Starnberg the land and bricks for the new church to be built. The church building and its interior design correspond to the late Rococo style.
