The neo-Romanesque church with Gothic and Art Nouveau elements was built in 1908 in a development area in the former Kaiserstraße. [...] Industrialization in Bielefeld at the end of the 19th century created a great need for housing for factory workers. The Catholic population rose significantly and with it the need for a new church. Until then, the Jodokuskirche was the parish church for all Catholics of the former city of Bielefeld. [...] Because of the character of the parish as parish priest, St. Joseph, patron saint of workers, was elected to the parish patron.

This Bielefeld church is dedicated to Saint Joseph, the nursing father of Jesus Christ. Like Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist, he is a man on the threshold from the Old to the New Testament. Joseph was from the house of David, one of the twelve tribes of Israel. He was a carpenter by trade and the fiancé of the Blessed Mother Mary.
