Justus Jonas, a man of that time, a close confidant and friend of Martin Luther, lived in this house. He still plays an important role for Eisfeld today. He was not one of the reformers who wrote major theological texts. Theologically oriented towards Luther, he represented the interests of the Wittenberg reformers on a church law and administrative level. His legal knowledge and practical experience in shaping the Reformation made him a particularly capable negotiator. In the last years of his life, Jonas was worn down by intra-Protestant difficulties, as well as family and health problems. In 1553 he found a final job as a pastor and superintendent in Eisfeld, where he died on October 9, 1555 and was buried in the cemetery outside the town (today the "Old Cemetery").
