Justus Jonas lived in this house, a man of that time, a close confidante and friend of Martin Luther. He still plays an important role for Eisfeld today. He was not among the reformers who wrote great theological writings. Theologically oriented towards Luther, he represented the interests of the Wittenberg reformers on canonical and administrative levels. Due to his legal knowledge and also due to his practical experience in shaping the Reformation, he was a particularly capable negotiator.

In the last years of his life, Jonas was worn down by inner-Protestant difficulties, as well as family and health problems. In 1553 he found his last position as pastor and superintendent in Eisfeld, where he died on October 9, 1555 and was buried in the cemetery outside the town (today the "Alter Friedhof").
