Prince Leopold III Friedrich Franz of Anhalt-Dessau had the Gustavusburg built between 1784 and 1786. The wall watch house was initially used as a residential building and to store equipment for the maintenance of the neighboring flood walls. In 1792 he donated the house to the Swedish captain Baron von Greifenheim. The common name Gustav Adolf is due to a gilded relief on the main façade depicting the Swedish king Gustav Adolph. The building had been operated as an inn since 1863, but after it was no longer in use in 1969 it fell into disrepair. The ruins were first secured after 1990. With financial support from the state of Saxony-Anhalt, the Dessau-Wörlitz Cultural Foundation was able to purchase the property from private ownership in December 2005 and then repair the existing building structure and rebuild the risalit with the relief.[1]

The building is registered as a listed building.
