The radar station in Bertem consists of two radar towers that are 350 m apart: a main tower and a ‘back-up tower’. The radar in Bertem covers an area with a radius of 260 km (Paris-Dover-Leeuwarden-Frankfurt) up to an altitude of 60,000 feet (almost 20 km). Bertem has a primary and a secondary radar. The primary radar provides information about the distance, the direction of flight and the speed of the aircraft. The secondary radar transmits pulses that are answered by a transponder on board the aircraft with data about the altitude, the identification of the aircraft and any alarms.
