The park was created in the 19th century as a park garden around the prestigious Egmont Castle. The yew trees and old brown beech are remnants of the originally created park garden.

In the summer, the park is the setting for various festivals and concerts.

The cast iron statue of Lamoraal van Egmont has been watching over the park since 1968. The statue dates from 1820 and originally adorned the market square.

The Egmont Park has been a protected monument since 1987.

In the green Egmont Park, the Egmont Castle stands on the site where a castle had stood since the eleventh century. The Egmont Castle had a turbulent history and was converted several times from a castle to a luxurious residence. In the 16th century, the castle came into the possession of its most famous resident, Count Lamoraal van Egmont.
