    Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) was already internationally known during his lifetime for his baroque paintings. He was born in Germany, where his Belgian parents had moved, but grew up in Antwerp. In that city he had a ‘palazzo’ built in 1610. This city palace, where Rubens lived and worked, is located on the current Wapper and is now a museum, the Rubenshuis. The bronze statue of Peter Paul Rubens on the Groenplaats was made by the Antwerp sculptor Willem Geefs (1805-1883) and was placed in 1843.
