In the early years of the 19th century, Horendonk was little more than a collection of about twenty houses. People had to go to Essen for their Sunday mass and crossing the stream valley was not always possible during wet periods.
That is why Jan Goetstouwers from the farm 'De Leeuwerk' decided in 1853 to build the first Horendonk Maria chapel in the 'Groten Horendonk' district together with some neighbours.

On October 26, 1945, the first stone for the chapel was laid. The building materials were obtained in various ways, often remnants of war-damaged buildings from Nispen, Roosendaal and Essen. Various Nispen residents were able to build a beautiful chapel with their efforts and the materials obtained. The consecration of the prayer house by pastor Fassaert took place with great interest at the first national commemoration of the Second World War on May 4, 1946.
