The construction consists of a wooden frame with three holes: one for the head and two for the hands. People convicted of minor crimes or misdemeanors were locked in here, so that passers-by could laugh at them, mock them or even throw garbage at them.
This type of punishment was mainly used in the Middle Ages and early modern period in European cities and towns. Nowadays, pillories mainly stand as historical monuments or tourist attractions.
