It is a replica of the Benz Patent Motor Car Number 1, the first car built by Carl Benz with an internal combustion engine. The patent for this tricycle was filed by Benz on January 29, 1886 and granted as DRP No. 37435 on November 2, 1886. Benz also completed the first test drive in Mannheim in 1886. The test drive is considered the birth of the automobile.

Carl Benz was born on 25.11.1844 in the inn "Zum Weinberg", which stood at the height of today's monument. The birth house was demolished in the late 1950s to make room for the extension of the Rheinstraße. [Stadtwiki]The patent motorcar has an "eternal parking lot" here.
