The current Hotel and Restaurant Katzenstein can look back on an eventful history. Built in the Third Reich as a castle of the old guard by the labor service on the once bare plateau, it was used and run down as a base by the Americans and then by the "Red Army" after the war. With the expansion of the nearby inner-German border, only reliable people were allowed to enter the border area, and so the hotel became a recreational home for members of the State Security. In 1935 the Reich Labor Service started building the farm. Also planned were the construction of the castle hotel, the rooms of which were named after the regions, and the castle, for which 100 comrades each had their own coat of arms.
