The Old Village of Westerholt, picturesquely clustered around the neoclassical castle of the same name, is truly special with its restored half-timbered houses. The entire settlement has been a listed monument since 1991 and is an outstanding example of a village and castle freedom preserved as a whole. The Old Village is considered one of the oldest and most beautiful enclosed settlements in North Rhine-Westphalia and is also called the "Westphalian Rothenburg."
