Drottens Church was built around 1240 as a parish church for the Germans. It was dedicated to the Holy Trinity (a common church name in Germany), but was also called the Trinity Church. Later the church was called Drotten.
The word "drott" means, among other things, prince or king and in this context is probably interpreted as ruler and Lord God. The current name of the church goes back to the word "drott". In the late Middle Ages the church was rebuilt and expanded. During the Reformation it was abandoned in 1528.
There is a legend about a rich merchant in Visby who had two daughters who did not get along. Since they could not go to the same church, he had two churches built next to each other, St. Lars and Drotten. They are therefore also called sibling churches or sister churches.
