The South Cemetery from 1869 is considered the first German park cemetery. Park cemeteries have irregular paths and architecturally designed hills and ponds alternating with forest-like areas.

Close to the main entrance, the burial site has the artificially created Kapellenberg, where the monumental hereditary burials of the wealthy middle class are impressive.

Since 1995, the area of the Evangelical Lutheran Church has been a listed building.

Its old trees along the enchanted paths make it so valuable.

Inaugurated on April 30, 1869, the South Cemetery is the oldest cemetery still in existence in Kiel. It is also unique because it is considered the first pure park cemetery in Germany.

Paths meander in curves under tall trees through the approximately 13 hectare site.

Landscape gardener Wilhelm Benque drew up the plans for the South Cemetery, which was still called the "New Cemetery" when it was inaugurated in 1869. The city administration urgently needed to do something at the time. Kiel grew and grew, and as a shipyard location and imperial naval port, the population numbers skyrocketed around the turn of the century.

The former St. Jürgen Cemetery near the main train station was no longer sufficient. When the Eichhof Cemetery was finally built around 30 years later, the previously "New Cemetery" was given the name South Cemetery. This name was transferred to the surrounding district.

The artificially created Kapellenberg rises up right behind the entrance. The upper class of Kiel's imperial society erected monuments there in a double ring: magnificent burial chapels, mausoleums and crypts testify to their wealth.
