In 1850, the miller C. Heinrich Hass commissioned the millwright Carl Friedrich Trahn to build a mill. With over 100 mills under his belt, Trahn is considered one of the most successful millwrights in Germany. Hass operated the mill for the next 16 years.
In 1886, the mill passed into the possession of Heinrich Detlef Mews, who operated it with wind power until 1938 and then with motor power.
When Mews died in 1939, his wife sold the mill to the city of Eutin for 10,000 Reichsmarks. The city then leased it to a master miller in 1946.
The city calculated the maintenance costs for the tenant at 9,000 Reichsmarks, which is why he was not supposed to pay any rent to the city for 10 years.
But the calculations had been incorrect, and after just one year, the cost of maintenance had already reached 20,000 Reichsmarks. The contract was subsequently amended
and the free lease was extended to 18 years. But that didn't help, because in 1950
the mill's operating life ended.
In 1965, the functional building was completely shut down, the mill machinery removed
and the building converted into residential space, which it subsequently served.
In 1970, the mill was declared a cultural monument.
Since 1979, the mill has housed a pub-restaurant, which, thanks to its two dedicated founders, achieved cult status and became known nationwide.
But the many years had not left the mill unscathed.
The Eutin Local History Association donated 10,000 DM for the restoration,
and others, such as the Eutin Citizens' Community, joined in – in 1994, wings were added.
The mill was then renamed "Moder Grau," as it had been popularly known for several years. The mill is the last of three windmills still standing in Eutin and, together with the church, the castle, and the water tower, forms the town's distinctive skyline.Unfortunately, another mill on the Kamp River burned down completely in 1927 – shortly after it was shut down.holsteinischeschweiz.de/eutiner-windmuehle-1
