Hiking
1885/86: Opened as part of the Harz Railway (HBE). Due to the extremely steep gradient (6%), a rack railway was initially used.
1920s: Rack railway technology was replaced by extremely powerful steam locomotives (the "Animal Class"), which traversed the line using only adhesion traction.
1960s: Electrification by the GDR as an "island network." With a special voltage of 25 kV (instead of the usual 15 kV), the line became a unique technical feature.
Purpose: The main focus was always the massive transport of limestone from the Harz quarries for industry.
