The model in Röttgen illustrates the dimensions and location of the former hunting lodge "Herzogsfreude," which at that time – built in the mid-18th century by Elector Clemens August – served as an ideal base for hunting trips in the Kottenforst forest. A monument here commemorates the Herzogsfreude hunting lodge, which stood on this site for barely 50 years. The castle was built by Elector Clemens August. After his death, his successors were not interested in it and had it torn down. Clemens August developed a lively building activity during his aegis. The Augustusburg and Falkenlust castles in Brühl, as well as Clemensruhe Castle ("Poppelsdorf Castle") and the city castle at the Hofgarten in Bonn also date from this period.
