The six meter high lion, which is looking intently across the lake, is the work of the Munich professor Johann von Halbig. It is made of Kehlheim sandstone and weighs around 50 tons. The Roman numerals "MDCCCLVI" are written on the base of the lion - they provide information about the year the building was completed: 1856.

Hiking

The lion stands here as the Bavarian heraldic animal and made clear the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Bavaria at this point on the Swabian Sea during the construction of the new seaport in 1854-56. With the lighthouse standing on the opposite pier, it has become a well-known landmark of the island city.
