The church is the oldest building on the Unteruckersee. It is located outside the city walls, right on the waterfront. The Ucker flows directly past it.

The origin of the church is not recorded by any written documents. But one thing is certain: the church was the oldest building here on the lake. This church was dedicated to St. Sabinus, who lived as a bishop in Italy and was invoked for help during floods. The uncertain situation at the Uckersee may well have been the deciding factor for the choice of the name. The name St. Sabinen for a church is unique in the entire German-speaking world. The construction of the church can be dated to around 1170.
Around 1235 to 1240 the monastery was founded, to which the existing church was assigned as a monastery church. The monastery buildings stood south of the church on the Uckersee. The monastery had property rights in several places in the Uckermark. The patron saint was Mary Magdalene. The monastery was given administration of all the churches in the city. In 1543 many rights were taken away from the monastery and in 1559 it was finally dissolved. The monastery church became the evangelical parish church of the lower town, and the monastery buildings became the property of the sovereign and the city.
In 1799 the church had to be closed because the west gable was washed away during a flood. In the years 1816-1817, the church was rebuilt except for the east gable and has been preserved in this form to this day. The church is a rectangular hall building. The half-timbered tower ends in a curved dome. The church rests on old oak planks, which date back to when it was built and are rammed into the moorland. The east gable is a remnant of the old monastery church. Parts of the old glass windows from 1817 have been preserved.
A beautiful Renaissance altar from 1597 is one of the treasures of the church. The altar was converted into a pulpit altar in 1817. The baroque wooden baptismal stand dates from 1727. It comes from the Marien church. A Schuke organ was installed in 1955 in place of the organ that was completely destroyed in 1945. Also in 1955 the galleries that reached up to the altar were partially removed.
Pastor's pictures are attached to the south side of the church. On the north side there are plaques with the names of all war victims of the parish of St. Sabinen from 1813 - 1918. The older plaques are said to be based on Schinkel's designs.
