Hiking

The French gardens and the immediate surroundings of the Africa Palace were embellished with several statues in 1897. On the lawn south of the Africa Palace stands the statue of Virginius and Virginia (1887) by Elisa Bloch. Virginius holds the lifeless body of his daughter Virginia in his left arm. He had killed his daughter because she was seduced and he wanted to keep the family honour untainted. His wide-spread legs, the high-raised dagger, the muscles and the scream on his face betray his inner struggle.
