The city was founded in 1361. Until 1421 Grafenwoehr was under the rule of the Landgraves of Leuchtenberg, until 1621/28 Kurpfälzisch, then Kurbayerisch. Since 1732, the 20th of January, the day of St. Sebastian (plague patron of the city), committed as a local holiday / Patronatstag. Until 1900, the city had only 900 inhabitants. At the town hall there is still an old pillory and a plague column
