Since 2012, Tongeren has been organizing the exhibition project ‘de 9de maand’. Through this, the city hopes to encourage passers-by to reflect on art and culture, but also on the past and future of Tongeren. The first artwork featured is ‘In Memoriam’ by Renato Nicolodi. The work is reminiscent of a tomb monument, but without the body of a deceased person. The central space is empty. It serves as a metaphor for a long-gone era, from which numerous traces of life have disappeared. The twelve Romanesque arches, in turn, create a link to Roman temple architecture.

The artwork 'In Memoriam' is by the Belgian artist Renato Nicolodi, the latest acquisition of the city of Tongeren as part of the exhibition project 'The 9th month'. The 9th month is, as it were, a long-term exhibition project in which the city of Tongeren has periodically purchased a relevant contemporary artwork since 2012 and placed it in the public space.
