Line 24 is an important link in freight traffic: it connects the ports of Antwerp, Ghent and Zeebrugge with Germany, without going via Liège. It is currently only used for freight transport. This tunnel is the second from Tongeren towards Visé. The internal width of this double-track tunnel is 8.60 m and the height is 6.50 m. Originally, the tunnel consisted of one section with a length of 1,640 m, but after a collapse, part of the tunnel was completely opened up and now consists of two separate sections. The first section of the Geertunnel is 1,020 m long. This is followed by an open section of 75 m and the second section of the tunnel, which is 542 m long. The actual length of the tunnel is therefore 1,020 m + 542 m, or 1,562 m.
