Between the Ehrenburg Castle and Veste Coburg, the path leads directly through the Hofgarten, a large landscaped park adjacent to Coburg's city center. The origins of the Hofgarten date back to the 17th century, when Duke Albrecht of Saxe-Coburg commissioned the planning of the baroque garden. The initially strictly geometrically constructed garden was redesigned almost 200 years later under Duke Ernst I. to a landscaped garden based on the English model. Under his successor, Duke Ernst II, the court garden finally received its present size and appearance. This is reminiscent of today, among other things, the great bronze equestrian monument Ernst II, which was built in 1899 above the Schlossplatz. In addition to its historical and botanical significance, the Hofgarten today has an important recreational function for the population.
