The church was built around 1400; previously a small chapel (Five Linden Chapel); originally a two-axis choir tower church under the patronage of St. James. In 1809, after a major fire, the church was extended by one axis; baroque furnishings (high altar, organ, lay pews) were obtained from the deconsecrated St. Martin's Church in Kronach. From 2007 to 2009, a general renovation (tower, sacristy, new color scheme); the interior was restored by Tobias Kammerer.
