The trail is historic because it was probably used very regularly in the Middle Ages, as it connected the Habichtswald hunting lodge and the Osterberg monastery with Tecklenburg and Osnabrück. In addition, the Tecklenburg counts not only had the right to supply the Osnabrück market, but also set the price of meat. So in the past, many heavily laden donkeys were probably driven to the market here.
