Yaks (Bos grunniens) are versatile domesticated animals. They make a significant contribution to the livelihood of the population in the high mountains of the Hindu Kush Himalayas. Yaks have special adaptability to altitude stress and thus ensure their survival at high altitudes. Yaks have a larger heart and lungs than cattle and a greater capacity for transporting oxygen in the blood. Nevertheless, the animals are not adapted to life at lower altitudes and tend to suffer from heat exhaustion at temperatures above around 15 degrees Celsius.
