Until 1989, the almost 1400-kilometer-long inner-German border (also known as the German-German border) prevented residents of the German Democratic Republic from visiting the Federal Republic of Germany or leaving it permanently to the West through massive fortifications.[1] This did not include the part of the GDR's border with Berlin, whose western sectors within Berlin were closed off by the Berlin Wall from 1961. The course of the demarcation lines between the western occupation zones and the Soviet occupation zone (SBZ) was determined by the main victorious powers of the Second World War in several conferences and continued in this geographical form after the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany and the founding of the GDR in 1949.

For forty years, a border divided Germany into two states. The GDR built border fortifications stretching almost 1,400 kilometers, which were gradually expanded into a death strip. The Stasi was firmly involved in securing this "anti-fascist protective wall."
