The landmark of Viana do Castelo is in the area of the Areosa district, the largest district outside the core city. From here you can enjoy a great view of the harbor, the Rio Lima, the beach of Cabedelo and the city center. Further uphill in the north is a Celtic archaeological site. A path leads to Santa Luzia through the forest in the north and the main path from the city in the east. Next to the church is a café and the mountain station of the impressive Téleférico. A hike into the valley is also possible from here.

Hiking

Definitely use the opportunity and take the stepped path or the elevator (2€) up to the dome. There you have a 360° panoramic view over Viana and the surrounding area, the Lima, the Atlantic and the mountains in the background! Care must be taken when climbing the dome: the last section is very narrow; it only fits 1 person through. Be sure to pay attention to the red traffic light, otherwise you have to turn around if there is oncoming traffic.
