The origin of the name of the Kalkhaven goes back to the seventeenth century. An important product that earned a lot of money in Dordrecht was lime. There were lime kilns here where the raw material was heated and then quenched with water. The ‘slaked lime’ was used for construction and worked better than brick or plaster.
Since about 1450, lime ships, usually with lime from Liège, came to Dordrecht and moored in the Nieuwe Haven. In 1656, a new harbour was dug so that the lime trade could be relocated. And that new harbour was called the Kalkhaven!
