The Kempisch Canal - Canal Dessel Schoten was dug in the period 1844 - 1846. Inland shipping penetrated into the Noorderkempen. Along the bank, where you can now enjoy recreational walks or mountain biking, a strip used to be provided for ship hunting. This heavy work was carried out by humans or animals. The perfect combination was the horse and the donkey. To make the hard work more bearable, trees were planted to provide shade strips above the towpath. On the other side, cycling tourists can now enjoy this shadow strip.
