The layout of the two-level square was subordinated to the Łazienkowska Route, which was led here. It runs on the lower level in a tunnel under the square, while the upper level includes Jana Chrystiana Szucha and Ujazdowskie Avenues, as well as the remaining two streets, which, however, are of secondary character in the entire layout. Both levels are connected by a system of exits, which is not complete, i.e. movement in all directions is not possible within the square.

During the modernization, the square was equipped with numerous underground connections for pedestrians, and a small square with a fountain was also created in its western part.

The square was created in 1768 as part of the Stanisławowska Axis[1] and a large layout, the so-called Ujazdowski, within which a system of star-shaped squares was to be created with the main axis intersecting the Ujazdowski Castle. The author of its layout was August Moszyński. From the square, designated at the intersection of the Royal Route with the Royal Road (currently Wyzwolenia Avenue and Nowowiejska Street), four avenues were marked out, three of which have survived to this day (Wyzwolenia Avenue, Koszykowa Street and Szucha Avenue).

In the 19th century, the square, located outside the dense urban development, was, together with Ujazdowski Square, a place of entertainment and exhibitions. At the end of the century, the Church of St. Michael the Archangel was built there, serving the Russian garrison, stationed in a vast barracks complex at the foot of the escarpment. The church was demolished in the 1920s.

    Recently subjected to comprehensive modernization

Plac Na Rozdrożu in Warsaw's Śródmieście district is a two-level transport hub through which the Łazienkowska Route runs. Its layout is subordinated to modern road solutions, and in the western part there is a square with a fountain. The square was created in 1768 as part of the Stanisławowska Axis, and in the 19th century it served as a place for games and exhibitions. The church of St. Michael the Archangel was built here, demolished in the 1920s. Before World War II, it was called Wolności Square. In the 1970s, in connection with the construction of the Łazienkowska Route, it took on its current form. In 2006, a monument to Roman Dmowski was placed here, and in 2021 there were plans to erect a monument to the Battle of Warsaw 1920, which was ultimately abandoned. In 2023, the square was the starting point of the "Great March" and underwent modernization, during which one of the underpasses was eliminated.
