Originally, there was a crossroads in this place, from which roads branched off towards Ujazdów (Wiejska Street), Mokotów (Mokotowska Street), Błonia (Żurawia Street), Grzybów (Bracka Street), Old Warsaw (Nowy Świat Street) and Solec (Książęca Street). Based on them, in the years 1724-1731, the so-called Calvary Road was marked out, leading to the Tomb of Christ located in the area of Ujazdowski Castle. At that time, three golden crosses were placed at the crossroads, giving the square the name Rozdroże Złotech Krzyży (or Rozdroże Trzech Krzyży).
