The Wasserkunst is located south of the Herrenhäuser Gardens. It is based on an idea by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716), who often met his favorite conversation partner Elector Sophie in her life project, the Herrenhäuser Gardens. The large fountain as a special attraction of the garden should be the highest in Europe. For this one needed water with high pressure. In 1696, Leibniz came up with the idea of branching off a channel from the line and building a dam with a water wheel at the beginning, then connecting it to the fountain in the garden. He designed the facility and construction started. After the death of the Elector Ernst August 1698 the work stopped. Only after Leibnitz's death in 1718 was the dam finally finished.
