Tips

  • The water art is south of the Herrenhausen Gardens. It is based on an idea by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716), who often met his favorite conversation partner, Electress Sophie, in her life project, the Herrenhausen Gardens. The big fountain as a special attraction of the garden should be the highest in Europe. To do this, you needed water at high pressure. In 1696 Leibniz had the idea of branching off a canal from the line and building a weir with a water wheel at the beginning, then connecting to the fountain in the garden. He designed the facility and construction began. After the death of Elector Ernst August in 1698, work stopped. The dam was not finished until after Leibniz's death in 1718.
