The remains of a Victorian Fountain is close to The Bear Pit and is in a sunken area accessed via steps. A simultaneously interesting, strange and sad sight.

"The pleasure gardens were considered the best the North West had to offer. The entrance was through the magnificent Jubilee arch. The pleasure gardens contained a zoo with many unseen foreign animals that included birds, bears, lions, monkeys, tigers and antelopes.
The Pleasure Gardens
eventually fell into disrepair during the 1930s and the Iron pier and Jubilee Arch were later dismantled.
Today the Rhododendrons and Laurels in this area are the most visible signs of the Victorian ornamental
gardens. Amongst the bushes lie the remains of three fountains and a bear pit, once part of the 19th century zoo. The adjacent grass area was the site of the stage and bandstand."
