The Rungholt legend knows the "background" of the storm surge. In its most well-known form, it tells the story of a priest who was summoned by some Rungholt citizens to a sick man's bedside to administer Holy Communion. Instead of the sick man, however, he found a drunken pig. The Rungholt citizens who had summoned the priest forced him to drink with them. To this end, they misused the consecrated communion chalice, which was a particularly serious crime. Because the priest initially resisted, he was also beaten. After the Rungholt citizens left him alone, he hurried home and called on God to punish them for their misdeeds. He himself left Rungholt that same night, accompanied by his maid and three virgins. A violent storm then broke out, causing the dikes to break, Rungholt to sink, and all its inhabitants to drown.
