The Pütten were created by the mining of clay for the dyke construction. Over the years more and more waterfowl and waders have settled here. When it gets too uncomfortable on the nearby Jade Bay, the birds like to seek shelter here. In spring you can watch the many chicks very nicely. In autumn and winter large flocks of barnacle geese can be seen. The gray heron is also a common sight, and in recent years the conspicuous white great egret. On the round you occasionally come across a small collection of fallow deer that have been staying here for years.
