On the Grote Markt in Diksmuide, merchants have been offering their merchandise at the weekly Monday market since the thirteenth century. Now there is also the farmers market on Saturday afternoon. Diksmuide is also known as the Butter City. The Boterhalle and the Butter and Cheese Festivities on Whit Monday bear witness to this.
The statue 'Het Manneke uit de Mane' is the symbol of the Flemish humor that is guarded by the 'Order of the Manneke', while the statue of General-Baron Jacques reminds us of the Battle of Diksmuide in 1914.
The center of Diksmuide received a thorough facelift. The aim of the project was to make the center of Diksmuide more attractive. The Grote Markt is now a square where it is nice to stay. The trees, benches and water features make it really cozy.

On the Grote Markt you can meet the statue of the controversial general Jacques de Dixmude.
Because of his military merits, Jacques received the grand ribbon of the Order of Leopold, the highest decoration in Belgium. In 1919 he was elevated to the nobility with the title of baron, and permission to add "de Dixmude" to his name. In several cities streets were named after him and statues were erected in his honor.
