Granny Green's Steps was designed by Malcolm Fraser Architects and built in June 2001 as part of Dance Base. The project was supported by a significant grant from the Scottish Arts Council Lottery and additional funding from the Edinburgh World Heritage Trust, City of Edinburgh Council and several other trusts.
Grannies Green was originally part of a typical laundry and bleaching green for servicewomen from Grassmarket and Johnstone Terrace.
