In July 2017, Edinburgh World Heritage, The Ross Development Trust and City Edinburgh Council initiated a renovation to restore the fountain to its original purpose and it once again produced water for the first time since 2010. The work was finally completed in 2018 and the fountain is not only beautiful but also spraying water. ewh.org.uk/ross-fountain

The Ross Fountain, an exquisite piece of Victorian cast iron craftsmanship, graces the heart of Princes Street Gardens. Local arms maker Daniel Ross saw the fountain in London at the Great Exhibition in 1862 and bought a larger version as a gift to Edinburgh in 1869. The 122 pieces that make up the fountain were shipped to Leith and transported to Princes St Gardens for assembly.

The Ross Fountain is a cultural jewel, reflecting the opulence and artistry of the Victorian era. Its intricate design, with cherubs, mermaids and water nymphs, exemplifies the era’s fascination with classical themes. The fountain’s arrival marked a significant moment in Edinburgh’s civic beautification efforts, demonstrating a commitment to improving public spaces for the enjoyment of both residents and visitors. It is a symbol of the city’s commitment to combining art and function.
