The canal was dug around 1400 and was originally part of a cut-off of the Hunze between Roodehaan and a point at the Borgwal/Cortinghlaan in De Hoogte. To the south it formed the connection with the Zuidlaarder peat bogs and later - under the name Winschoterdiep - via Sappemeer with the Oldambt. Winschoten was reached in 1637.

In the Middle Ages, the canal ran along the then outer defensive moat (dug around 1260). The northern part of the cut-off ran outside the city via the Selwerderdiepje. The southern part of the Schuitendiep, past the Steentilbrug, was called Winschoterdiep (now Oude Winschoterdiep) after 1632.

A full-fledged connection along the deepened northern city moat with the Reitdiep and the A dates from 1523. From approximately 1630 to 1884, the Schuitendiep was connected to the Damsterdiep; from 1630 to 1880 also to the Kattendiep/Zuiderdiep. The Kattenbrug was located over the Kattendiep. Finally, at the current Stadsschouwburg at the end of the 16th/beginning of the 17th century, there was another connection with the moat around the Schuitenschuiversschans, which in turn flowed into the Damsterdiep (at the Loppersumergang).

The street name Schuitendiep remains limited to the part between Sint Jansbrug and the Steentilbrug. See also Turfsingel, Winschoterdiep. At no. 6 the former Oliekoekengang; at nos. 20 - 30 the Verversgang, which has long since disappeared, but which is nevertheless still mentioned on city maps into the 21st century. The other gangs on the Schuitendiep o.z. are: Mussengang (30), Smakkersgang (48), Hopmansgang (62), Brouwersgang (72), Kleine Gang (86) and Grote Gang (88).
