The Martinikerk (Martini Church) on the "Grote Markt", the oldest and largest church in the city. Its connected with the west side Martinitoren (Martiniturm) was built between 1469 and 1482 from Bentheimer sandstone. From 1548 to 1577, the tower was 127 meters high, until the wooden top burned down on the occasion of a bonfire after the withdrawal of enemy troops.
