At the lower end of the pedestrian zone, just before the gate bridge crosses the Leimbach, the Lower Gate stood until 1831. This was one of the two entrances to the medieval town, which was fortified by the city wall, and probably dates back to the 15th century. Today, a plaque at the Löwen-Apotheke commemorates this building.
