The Cuxhaven coastal heath is the largest contiguous heathland on the mainland of the German North Sea coast. The extensive expansion of the heathens began only in the Middle Ages. The high demand for timber for dyke and shipbuilding as well as settlement in the low-wood marshes, "eternal rye cultivation" and the effects of the existing feudal system caused the large-scale desolation of the landscape.

The Koniks are wild horses that among other things ensure that the Cuxhaven heathland is preserved by eating disturbing plants. We were lucky enough to find the herd very close to the path during our return trip and to be able to observe and photograph it up close. A wonderful sight.
